Ongoing Sexual Harassment Complaints at Anna University
Ongoing Sexual Harassment Complaints at Anna University
Anna University was once synonymous with excellence in engineering and technical education. For many students across the country, it was a "dream fortress"—the ultimate destination for pursuing higher studies.
There was a time when engineering admissions across Tamil Nadu were conducted strictly as per the Anna University schedule, reflecting its prestige not just in the state, but throughout India. Students from all corners of the country flock here to study. However, this institution, which has mentored many for higher education, has in recent years gained notoriety for a rise in sexual offences.
The Case of Gnanasekaran
Last year, a female student at the university was subjected to such severe sexual harassment that she had to be hospitalised with injuries across her body. Following widespread protests sparked by her complaint, a man named Gnanasekaran was arrested. After a year-long legal process, he was convicted and is currently serving his sentence. Interestingly, Gnanasekaran had mentioned a certain "Sir" during the case, but that individual’s identity remains unknown to this day.
Recent Arrest: Gnanavel Babu
Following the Gnanasekaran case, a lecturer named Gnanavel Babu has been implicated this year. The accused, who is over 50 years old, allegedly subjected a female student to continuous and unspeakable physical and mental torture. Unable to endure it any further, the student lodged a police complaint. Gnanavel Babu was subsequently arrested at a relative's house in Tirunelveli and is currently in judicial custody. Following this, more women from the university have come forward to file complaints against him.
The Decline of Academic Integrity
Parents across India blindly trust this institution and send their children here to fulfill their aspirations. However, certain individuals employed to impart higher education are instead bringing disrepute to the sanctity of the academic sector. Anna University, which is meant to groom engineers and technical experts, has been devastated by such elements in recent years.
The Impact of Political Interference
The core of the issue lies in the appointment process. Ideally, lecturers and PhD-holding professors should be appointed based strictly on merit and qualification. However, due to political interference, individuals recommended by politicians are often appointed to these prestigious positions.
Such crimes will only decrease when universities are allowed to function autonomously, free from political meddling. The text suggests that under the current circumstances, a change in the state administration is necessary to effectively curb such offences.
