Protest Surge in Tamil Nadu Over Unfulfilled Election Promises

A growing number of women protesters are currently agitating for their rights—rights that were part of the election promises made by the ruling DMK party. The state government, however, has cited financial constraints as the reason for its inability to fulfill these commitments.

Key Groups and Demands:

 * Staff Nurses: Protesting for the regularisation of their services and permanent employment status.

 * Sanitary Workers: This group, which consists predominantly of women, is demanding to be placed on the permanent payroll. Currently, sanitation work has been outsourced to private contractors.

 * Educators: Teachers and professors are also fighting for permanent job security.

 * Government Employees: Staff across various departments are demanding the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). They have announced a state-wide strike scheduled for January 6, 2026.

Conditions at Protest Sites

In a significant development, women staff nurses demanding permanent positions were directed to Kelambakkam to hold their protest. However, it has been reported that restrooms and toilets at the protest site were intentionally locked in an effort to disrupt the demonstration.

Media Coverage

Regrettably, the mainstream media in Tamil Nadu has largely failed to cover these core issues. This lack of transparency is a concerning trend for democratic free speech and the right to dissent.
