Kundrathur Abirami Incident: My Perspective
Kundrathur Abirami Incident: My Perspective
The Kundrathur Abirami incident, where a woman dared to murder her children and attempt to kill her husband for an illicit affair, sent shockwaves through society. Her four-year-old daughter died after consuming milk laced with sleeping pills. Her husband and seven-year-old son fortunately survived. Later, after her husband left for work, Abirami suffocated her seven-year-old son to death with a pillow.
This murder case, widely discussed across Tamil Nadu in 2018, shocked many. It was widely reported at the time that superstar Rajinikanth took a personal interest in the case, invited Abirami's husband to his Poes Garden residence to offer condolences, and provided some assistance.
Background to the Incident
Kunrathur Abirami and Vijay fell in love during their college days and got married. As Vijay's family did not accept the marriage, Vijay settled down near his wife Abirami's home.
It was customary for Vijay to visit a nearby biryani shop with his family after work or on holidays. Abirami used this to her advantage. In her husband's absence, she began calling the shop to order food. In those days, before food delivery services like Zomato and Swiggy were prevalent, a person named Meenakshi Sundaram, who worked at the shop, would personally deliver the parcels to Abirami. Over time, this developed into an illicit affair, which ultimately culminated in murder.
What We Should Understand From This
From this incident, we must understand two important things:
- Uncontrolled, Free Lifestyle: A lifestyle without any restrictions in the name of individual freedom.
- Mindset to Consume Any Food at Any Time: Disregarding the rules to be observed regarding food habits.
Generally, those born as Hindus have certain restrictions:
- Consuming only certain foods.
- Avoiding certain foods.
- Understanding that food itself is a cause for the arousal of emotions.
In terms of food habits, there have been long-standing rules for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians:
- Vegetarians avoid onion and garlic on special days.
- Non-vegetarians avoid non-vegetarian food on special days.
- They also observe certain rules about when to consume food.
These restrictions are generally followed in Hindu society, from Brahmins to other non-vegetarian communities.
Importance of Social Restraints
Today, due to certain deceptive political narratives like 'freedom' and 'rationality,' everyone in Hindu society is gradually losing our cultural norms. This is a major reason for the emergence of individuals like Abirami.
Caste restrictions within Hindu society and the associated lifestyle are a means of preserving morality.
People in today's society do not respect these food restrictions and cultural rules.
If Abirami's family or her husband had followed such a regulated lifestyle—that is, if they had observed Hindu social restrictions like 'I should only consume biryani at this time, avoid it on certain special days, and not always consume non-vegetarian food'—and if they had fully understood that 'the food we consume stimulates our emotions and becomes our destroyer,' such heinous acts would not have occurred.
