Is Colonialism Still Alive?

The current situation faced by Indian tech professionals in the US feels like turning the pages of history. When leaders like Trump warn major tech companies like Microsoft and Google to stop hiring from India, it evokes a strange feeling.

Centuries ago, when the British Empire ruled India, millions of Indians worked as clerks, accountants, and middlemen in their administrative machinery. We were used to build an empire that wasn’t ours. Our labour and talent strengthened foreign dominance.

The situation today is quite similar. Indian engineers are the backbone of Silicon Valley. We build the platforms for the world’s leading tech companies, write their code, and run their complex systems. But despite all this contribution, we face threats like “go back” or “you won’t be rehired.” Just like in the colonial era, we are working for others’ growth – often losing out on our own nation’s immense potential.

This raises an important question: Why should India’s brightest minds fight for recognition, respect, or even basic visa security on foreign soil, under a foreign flag? Why shouldn’t they build a better future in their own country? Instead of being considered a liability, shouldn’t they be leaders?

When India has the potential to become the next hub of innovation, why should we help others win the AI race?

The time has come to reverse this “brain drain.” As our freedom fighters once realised, serving a system that doesn’t respect us isn’t loyalty – it’s servitude.

It’s time to come back, rebuild, and rise. Not as job seekers, but as job creators! Not for others’ GDP, but for India! Not to merely survive abroad, but to thrive in our homeland!
