In 1921, when communal reservations were introduced by the Justice party in the Madras Presidency, there was a huge exodus of Tamil and Palghat brahmins to North India (British India) especially Karachi and Lahore.

Mani Shanker Iyer has stated how his father migrated to Lahore in the 1920's due to this problem.

Karachi and Bombay (now Mumbai) were twin cities and were similar. There was a ferry every day from Bombay taking passengers to a four hour journey to Karachi.
