Tamil Brahmins - Supporters of Regional party or National Party
Brahmins would support any political party which had the nationalistic interest, there is no point in asking the question whether it is national party or regional party.
Till early 1990’S Brahmins were supporting the Congress party, because it fought for independence.
Even congress party was called as brahmins party by DMK cadres, till Rajiv Gandhi was alive.
Congress party leaders like Indira Gandhi was called by karunanidhi as 'கிராப் வெட்டிய காஷ்மீரத்து பாப்பாத்தி' which means 'crap hair styled Kashmiri brahmin woman'.
Rajiv Gandhi also coined as பார்ப்பான் it means brahmin which was used by Dravidian parties in a hatred term.
Hence, Brahmins of past generations were supporting the Congress party, until Rajiv Gandhi period and also for some times when congress was under the rule of narasimha rao.
Still I remember , when I was doing 5th standard, during 1989 elections, Jayalalithaa was contesting in rooster symbol, congress also contesting alone in assembly elections, at that time Brahmins were supporting the Congress party, which came at 3rd position.
As the Congress led by Rajiv Gandhi had the alliance partnership with ADMK in consecutive times during the elections made the brahmins move towards AIADMK slowly , after assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
In 1992, national integrity council meeting was held in new Delhi, in that one voice raised in support of RAM Mandir at ayodhya, that voice was none other than the voice of former chief minister Jayalalithaa, which makes the brahmins makes close towards her.
Brahmins in Tamilnadu changes their voting style and moved from their traditional congress party to ADMK, not because Jayalalithaa was a brahmin, but she had a more nationalistic interest than the regionalistic interest.
Brahmins continuosly voted in maximum only in favour of Jayalalithaa after mid 1990’s.
Brahmins are not pro-Admk but anti DMK. Many brahmins voted only for ADMK more than a decade, even though they like BJP very much. Voting to BJP may makes the DMK to capture the power, hence their choice was AIADMK, until Jayalalithaa was alive.
ADMK is the only Dravidian party which wishes the Tamilnadu people on Hindu religious festivals, but DMK is making fun on Hindu festivals as 'holiday celebration (விடுமுறை திருநாள்)' in their TV channels, instead of wishing Hindu festival.
After the demise of Jayalalithaa, maximum Brahmins move towards BJP and ADMK supporters of soft hindutva also joins with Brahmins in supporting the Bjp.
Due to that impact when ADMK and BJP contested alone in last parliament elections held in 2024. Admk lost its deposit in 9 parliament segments and came 3rd position in many parliament seats of tamilnadu.
Even though brahmin population is miniscule is around 3 to 5 percentage of total population. But the Brahmin population is scattered across tamilnadu this also one of the reasons bjp gained more than 10% of vote in last parliament elections.
