Occasions that Brahmins needs to change their Sacred Thread
In general the Brahmins of all Vedas except sama Veda would unwear old sacred thread wear a new sacred thread during shravana poornima on every year, which falls between July and August.
For sama vedis, it would falls on Ganesha chaturthi day. This is the significance difference between the sama Veda and other Vedas of changing their Sacred thread once in a year.
But there are other occasions in which Brahmins needs to change their Sacred thread. They are as follows.
For the following reasons Brahmins need to change the Sacred thread.
1) After the mourning period
2) Unknowingly touched or dashed ladies during menstrual periods
3) After the vrithi period (childbirth in our home or in dayathi house)
4) While doing nature calls we need to tie the sacred thread on the left ear. If we forget to tie it on the left ear, then sacredness is lost , there also we need to change the Sacred thread.
5) To avoid such circumstances we need to wear the sacred thread as a garland around the neck. While wearing the shirt we need to wear the sacred thread as a garland, hence no need to tie the sacred thread over the left ear.
6) After hair cut or self shaving also it is needed to change it mandatorily. But as per sastras we should not do the self shaving. You need to change the Sacred thread after the barber touches your body.
7) After visiting the hospital or returning from the houses who are observing the mourning period also need to change the Sacred thread.
8)For some times we need to wear the sacred thread like garland, like a husband-wife relation(carefully putting the words). If we didn't wear it like a garland then we needed to change the Sacred thread.
We need to follow the above in order to maintain the Sacredness of the thread which Brahmins are wearing.
