Historical factors that led AIADMK to rule for 30 Years

 Mgr , a magnanimous personality, who had also charisma which he earned through acting multiple films in Tamil, started the ADMK during 1972.

M.G.Ramachandran who was affectionately called as mgr by people was successful until his life time.

He won the election in 1977 with clear majority and he succeeded in next 2 assembly elections during 1980 and 1984, which were held due to various political reasons.

Because of mgr popularity DMK had came to power during 1967 and 71 consecutively. Karunanidhi with the help of mgr came to power after the demise of annadurai during 1969.

Karunanidhi after came to power as chief minister, he tried to sidelined MGR all the way. He introduced his son M.K.Muthu as a cinema hero against the mgr. Mgr, a DMK party treasurer highlights the misuse of party fund and he asked the reason for that. It leads the enmity further between Karunanidhi and mgr.

During 1972, in tamilnadu assembly slipper was thrown on mgr, hence mgr walked out of the assembly and in a short period of time, float the new party named as Anna dravida munnetra kalagam(ADMK).

In 1973, admk candidate Maya devar in Dindigul parliament by-election made magnificent victory and it gave the starting victory to mgr, with in one year of party floated.

After the above victory it gave the moral boost to mgr to move the party to next level. MGR highlighted the corruption that is happening in and around the DMK government headed by Karunanidhi , as a result Indira Gandhi appointed justice sarkaria to probe the corruption that happened during 1972–76 DMK rule.

Mgr continuously highlighted the corruption and anti people rule of DMK, which made the marvelous victory to mgr during 1977 assembly election.

Following factors also made admk to won the 1977.

1. Admk formed alliance with Marxist communist and forward bloc.
2. DMK contested alone
3. Inc(Indira) formed alliance with Indian communist party
4. Janata party contested alone.

After 6 months gap , parliament election had been held, in that mgr had a alliance with INC(Indira congress) and the 1977 parliament election results was in favour of admk and Congress combo. Please find the below photo of 1977 parliament election.

Even though Inc won in tamilnadu, but it lost all over india during 1977 parliament election. Janata dal under moraji Desai became prime minister. Slowly MGR started supporting moraji Desai government and break the congress alliance.

Both moraji Desai and Charan Singh not able to provide the stable government, hence there was a parliament election during 1980.

As the mgr started supporting janata dal due to that alliance swap has happened in both admk and DMK. Inc became the alliance partner of DMK and Janata dal became alliance partner of admk. But 1980 parliament election results came in favour of DMK even though admk provided the corruption free good governance.

People want the stable government in centre due to that 1980 parliament election went in favour of Congress and DMK alliance. Mgr won only 2 seats and Janata dal wiped out. Please find the following election result of 1980 parliament election.

After DMK congress combo won in 1980 parliament election then Indira Gandhi became the prime minister. Karunanidhi keep on placing the request to dissolve the ruling admk government under MGR.

After mgr government got dissolved in 1980, mgr formed the alliance with both the communist parties and DMK had a major ally as congress.

But for all of your surprises admk sweep the poll in 1980 assembly election with out major alliance partner. Mgr asked the justice with the people that his government was dissolved on silly reasons. Please find the below photograph of 1980 assembly election results.

In 1980 assembly election admk had the alliance with both the communist parties and made the historic win.

After this historic win mgr , made the smooth relationship with Indira Gandhi and became closer to Indira.

As prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated during oct 31, 1984, mgr planned to conduct assembly election along with parliament, which was planned 6 months ahead by Rajiv Gandhi.

In both the parliament and assembly, admk swept the poll in 1984.

As mgr was hospitalized in usa, even though he won in both the parliament and assembly elections.

Assembly election 1984 is as follows.

Karunanidhi was not contested in the assembly election because in 1980 assembly election Karunanidhi won by a thin narrow margin in anna nagar assembly segment.

After the demise of mgr in 1987, party had the split in to 2 factions, janaki (wife of mgr) and Jayalalithaa. Janaki mgr was chief minister for one month, then assembly was dissolved after the fight happen between the 2 factions.

Then Jayalalithaa was successful in between these 2 factions, Jaya won 27 seats even though she contested in the rooster symbol.

Then Jayalalithaa was successful in capturing the succession after mgr and she was successful until her demise in 2016. Jayalalithaa won in 1991, 2001,2011 and 2016 assembly elections.

Jayalalithaa’s charisma is as equivalent to mgr, but now admk is headed by edapaddi, needs to face the problem, as of now party splitted into 2 factions one at ops and another with EPS.

We need to wait and see who will be successful in assembly election in 2026.
